Russian strikes kill several people across Ukraine, damage Kyiv data centres

Russia carried out a new wave of large-scale drone and missile strikes on several Ukrainian cities over the weekend, killing at least eight people according to Ukrainian officials. The capital Kyiv, the northeastern city of Sumy, and areas around Odesa in the south were among the regions affected. Broader tallies covering a two- to three-day period cite higher totals, with some reports referencing up to 14 deaths and more than 50 injuries nationwide.

In Kyiv, the strikes hit and damaged two data centres. Russia's defence ministry stated that the facilities had been providing services to the Ukrainian military and were therefore considered legitimate targets. As a result of the strikes, several Ukrainian media companies were temporarily forced off air, including the television channels Novyny.Live and Armiia TV. A market in the capital was also struck, injuring several people, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko; some of the injured required hospitalization.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia had launched approximately 3,900 drones, cruise missiles and aerial bombs against Ukraine over the past week. He stated that 277 attack drones alone were launched the day before the latest strikes, 155 of which were jet-powered models. Ukraine's air defence force said it had intercepted or neutralized 147 of the drones deployed the previous night. Zelensky reiterated accusations that Russia is deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure, particularly ahead of the coming winter, in an apparent effort to weaken the population's access to energy.

The strikes are part of a continuing pattern of Russian aerial offensives against Ukrainian cities that have intensified in recent weeks. Ukrainian sources described a 'fourth consecutive night' of strikes on Kyiv, pointing to a systematic and repeated bombardment of the capital. Sumy was also targeted by Russian airstrikes in preceding days, killing two people and injuring 23, including four children, according to Ukrainian authorities.

Alongside the strikes on Ukraine, Poland reported suspected Russian provocations near its airspace and borders. The Polish government subsequently announced a strengthening of its air defences. NATO member states responded with heightened vigilance to the reported incidents, which are being viewed in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine as part of a possible widening of tensions along the alliance's eastern flank.

On the diplomatic front, a decision by the European Union added further friction between Moscow and Brussels. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the transfer of eight billion euros in proceeds from frozen Russian assets to Ukraine as 'theft,' stating that Moscow had repeatedly voiced its assessment of such measures. The remark came as Western states continue their financial support for Kyiv, while Russia simultaneously signaled it would not halt its military offensive.

Exact casualty figures vary considerably depending on the reporting period and source, reflecting differing tallying intervals used by news agencies—some reports summarize events over a single day, others over multiple days. It also remains unconfirmed whether the Russian claim that the targeted data centres served military purposes is accurate; this characterization has not been corroborated by Ukrainian officials. Given the continuing pattern of strikes and warnings about a deliberate weakening of energy infrastructure ahead of winter, further attacks as well as diplomatic friction over Western support for Ukraine are expected to continue.
