US networks suspend Trump pool coverage after CNN, MS NOW and Politico banned

Five of the largest US television networks – ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox and NBC – have suspended their participation in the rotating pool coverage of President Donald Trump. The move comes in response to a decision by the White House to bar three media organizations, CNN, MS NOW and Politico, from covering the president.

The so-called pool system is a decades-old practice in the US capital: since not all accredited journalists can physically attend every event at the White House simultaneously, a small rotating group of reporters covers events on behalf of the entire press corps. The information gathered is then shared with all other media outlets. After the White House excluded CNN, MS NOW and Politico from this rotation, the remaining major networks decided to temporarily halt their own participation. President Trump himself made pointed remarks about the affected outlets, publicly calling them 'FAKE NEWS' and a 'cancer' on the United States. These comments are part of a long pattern of attacks by Trump on segments of the US press that has run throughout his political career.

The current dispute raises fundamental questions about the relationship between the executive branch and the media in the United States. Critics view the selective exclusion of individual media outlets as an attempt to limit unfavorable coverage. Supporters of the White House's move argue, conversely, that the administration has the right to regulate access to certain spaces and events on its own terms.
