Russian strikes kill eight in Ukraine after Zelensky appeals for Russia sanctions at UN

Russian drone and missile strikes killed at least eight people across Ukraine overnight into Thursday, according to Ukrainian officials. The attacks hit targets in the capital Kyiv as well as areas in the country's northeast, including the Kharkiv region. Officials said the strikes damaged civilian infrastructure, including a maternity hospital and a farm. President Volodymyr Zelensky said two people died in the latest strike on Kyiv alone.

The attacks came just after Zelensky addressed the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he called for tougher sanctions against Russia. The Ukrainian president urged the international community to cut off Moscow's revenue through trade restrictions and reduced purchases of Russian oil. According to several reports, he described Russian President Vladimir Putin as "patient zero" for spreading war in the region. Zelensky also warned that the conflict could expand further if it is not brought to an end soon, calling for measures to disrupt what he described as "Russia's finances and Russia's production" before another difficult winter of war.

The latest strikes follow a string of deadly attacks in recent days. A day earlier, according to the Straits Times, Russian strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure killed seven people, with Moscow stating at the time that there would be no "pause" in the war. The concentration of deadly attacks around the timing of the UN General Assembly has been noted by observers as a sign that diplomatic efforts toward a ceasefire have so far had little visible effect on the fighting on the ground.

According to Ukrainian sources, the overnight attacks combined drones and missiles. Russia has in recent months increasingly deployed faster, harder-to-intercept drone models, while Ukraine says it lacks sufficient interceptor systems to reliably counter ballistic missiles. This imbalance in air defense capability is cited as one reason why civilian sites — including residential buildings, medical facilities and farms — continue to be hit.

The impact of the strikes was not confined to Ukrainian territory. According to Ukrinform, Poland scrambled military aircraft twice on Thursday morning in response to the Russian strikes on Ukraine. This illustrates that the effects of the attacks also extend to Ukraine's immediate neighbors, prompting heightened alert among Polish air defenses.

Russia disputes claims that the targets struck were civilian in nature. According to TRT World, Moscow said it had hit facilities linked to military activity. At the same time, Russia has accused Ukraine of causing a fire in a southern Russian region with drone debris. Reports differ notably in their assessment of which sites were actually struck during the overnight attacks and what military relevance, if any, they held.

Meanwhile, according to Al Jazeera, the United States and Russia held intensified diplomatic talks in New York, reportedly focused in part on the war's impact on global energy markets. No concrete outcomes from these discussions have been disclosed so far. It also remains unclear whether, or how, the tougher sanctions Zelensky called for might be implemented by UN member states.

On the Russian side, military commentator Alexey Chadayev told the state news agency TASS that Ukraine cannot win what he called the drone war, arguing that Kyiv is wasting significant financial resources on the effort. His remarks reflect a broader Russian position that a military resolution remains achievable, in contrast to the approach favored by Ukraine and its Western partners, who are pressing for economic isolation of Russia as a lever to end the war.

Taken together, the events of recent days suggest that the war, now in its fourth and a half year, has not seen any immediate de-escalation despite high-level diplomatic activity at the United Nations. How the sanctions push, the ongoing US-Russia talks, and the continuing air campaign will interact in the coming weeks remains uncertain.
