UN investigators find grounds to believe US committed war crimes in Iran strikes

An independent United Nations fact-finding mission has said there are 'reasonable grounds' to believe the United States committed war crimes during the war fought by the US and Israel against Iran. The findings focus on two air strikes carried out in the opening days of the conflict: an attack on an elementary school in the southern Iranian city of Minab, and a strike on a sports complex in a residential area of the city of Lamerd.

According to the mission, the strike on the school in Minab killed at least 150 people, including approximately 120 children. Investigators concluded that the strike was not the result of a technical malfunction or an errant missile, but was instead part of what they describe as an indiscriminate attack that resulted in civilian deaths. The mission also found that the strike on the sports complex in Lamerd hit a clearly identifiable civilian facility located in a residential area.

The United States has not officially acknowledged or commented on either strike. No independent statement from the US government addressing the mission's specific allegations has been issued at this time. The strikes occurred during the broader military conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran that escalated earlier this year.

Alongside the allegations against the United States, the UN mission also accused the Iranian government of committing crimes against humanity during its crackdown on domestic protests. The report cites unlawful killings, torture and the targeted persecution of demonstrators. The mission's findings thus level serious allegations against both sides of the conflict within the same report.

The fact-finding mission's report will be presented to the UN Human Rights Council for discussion. However, the mission itself has no authority to initiate criminal proceedings or bring charges. It remains unclear how the Human Rights Council will respond to the findings, or whether international courts or other bodies will take up the allegations in any formal capacity.
